Rene Merlin Johnson
1924~2014

Salt Lake City, UT-Rene Merlin Johnson was born October 30, 1924 in Idaho Falls, Idaho to Clarence Frithiof and Annie Blaylock Johnson. He began his schooling in Idaho Falls. The family moved to Shelley, Idaho, where he finished high school, graduating in 1942 with the honor of valedictorian of his class. He enlisted in the Navy in 1949 and served as a radioman on a command ship in the Pacific. When the war ended, he returned home and soon served an LDS Mission in Sweden.
He married Pearl Alice Hanson on June 2, 1949 in the Idaho Falls Temple. They lived the first 10 years of their married life on the farm where Rene grew up in Shelley. He was then asked to be farm manager for the New York and New Jersey Stakes Welfare Farm. He then served as farm manager of the Chesapeake Stake Welfare in Maryland. He also worked for the Agricultural Research Center in Beltsville, Maryland. Subsequently he graduated from the University of Maryland with a Master's Degree in Agricultural Economics. He then worked in the office of Economic Development in Montgomery County Maryland for 20 years. In addition to this Rene and Pearl owned and operated a pick your own berry farm. It wasn't exactly pick your own because they hired school kids, neighbor kids, church kids and migrant workers to pick berries to furnish a variety of produce stands as well as a bakery in Baltimore that made jelly filled donuts. They retired, sold the farm and returned to the west in 1985. They enjoyed some time traveling and then together served a mission in Sweden.
Rene was always a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served in many capacities such as Gospel Doctrine Teacher, councilor to a Branch President, councilor to a Bishop, Bishop, and Stake Patriarch. Rene and Pearl have seven children, Corinne (deceased) (Jay Hall), Barbara (Dennis Massey), Douglas (Lucinda Wright), Margaret (Nick Itri, deceased), Virginia (Ned Black), Gordon (Gerturd Stieffler), Roger (Whitney Wilson). They also have 38 grandchildren and 66 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Wednesday April 30, 2014 at the Salt Lake City Stake Center, 142 West 2nd North, Salt Lake City, Utah, with a viewing at 9:30 - 10:45am.
