Lauretta Barnes was born in Holmes county, Ohio, December 5, 1849, died at her home in Churdan February 28, 1912, aged 62 years, 2 months and 23 days. Her parents were G.R. and Emily Nowels, and she was the oldest of 14 children. She came to Iowa with her parents in 1850, settling in Scott county, later removing to Clinton county, this state.
She was married to Isaac M. Barnes, a veteran of the Civil war, September 19th, 1870, and was the mother of nine children, all but one of whom are now living to mourn their loss of a mother. She settled with her husband on a farm near Churdan, Iowa, in 1879, and 13 years ago removed to her late residence in this place.
About 15 years ago she united with the Disciples church at Adaza, and remained a member of the same place till her death. She was an active member of the Ladies Aid society of the same. She was ever faithful to her duties as wife and mother, and will be sadly missed in her home. She leaves an aged husband, 8 children, 6 brothers and 5 sisters to mourn her departure to the home beyond this vale of tears. She leaves a large circle of friends who always found her ready to help in any good cause in the community.
Mrs. Barnes had not enjoyed good health for some time, but the community was not prepared to hear of her sudden death.
Funeral services were conducted at the M.E. church Friday afternoon by the pastor C.B. Guest and were attended by a large concourse of sympathizing friends after which interment was made in the Churdan cemetery. THE REPORTER extends sympathy to the bereaved family.
