James Emmett Nowels

Funeral services for James Emmett Nowels, 93, a former Yale resident, were held Thursday, May 6, at Hills Funeral Home in Guthrie Center, Iowa with Rev. L.H. Athey, pastor of the Methodist church of Guthrie Center officiating.

Burial was at the Dodge Center cemetery in Guthrie County.

Mr. Nowels was born Feb. 12, 1861 in Clinton County, a son of Governor Ray and Emily Nowels and died May 4, 1954 at the Guthrie County Hospital.

His parents moved to Guthrie County in 1880 and he spent most of his life here. He received an award for being one of the oldest settlers.

He was one of a family of 14, all of whom have preceded him in death except a brother, Ira Nowels of Boone, Iowa, and a sister, Emma Howe, of Sheridan, Montana. He is also survived by nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends.

Casket bearers were William Keebler, Glen Francis, Irwin Bean and Forest Tam.

Among those attending the services were Ira Nowels, Ralph Nowels, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Nowels of Boone, Mrs. Earl [Alta Susan] Warner of Granger, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Triplett of Jefferson, Mr. and Mrs. Orel Patterson and Mrs. Frank Martin of Yale, Mrs. Bob Dresback and Howard Zellar of Bagley.
