Lena Yates was the daughter of Robert F. Yates & Elizabeth E. Moore. When Lena was 14 years old and lived in Broughton, Illinois. Charles wrote a postcard to another girl and Lena received it by mistake, They started corresponding in the spring of 1910 and were married 06 December 1910. They established their first home on the Wiederholt property in Shawneetown. Later moving to Eldorado, Illinois where all 9 of their children were born.
The economy in southern Illinois was very grave in the early 1950's and they left Eldorado and went to Hammond, Indinana to work in the steel plant. Charles was forced to retire in the 1956 due to ill health and they moved back to Eldorado, Illinois.
Many of their years in Eldorado were spent on Broughton Road, but in the later years they moved closer to town and church and were living on Fifth Street when Charles passed away. Lena then moved to West Frankfort, Illinois to be nearer her children.
