Helen was born in Tunnel City on June 28, 1914, the beloved daughter of the late Martin and Mary (née: Blaskey) Betthauser.

On June 28, 1937, she was united in marriage to Gordon Adelmer Bishop at St. Mary Catholic Church in Tomah, WI; he preceded her in death in 1969. On April 6, 1974, at St. Rose Catholic Church in Racine, she was united in marriage to Alex T. Witte; he preceded her in death in 1995.

Helen attended St. Teresa College for Women in Winona, Minnesota, and was a graduate of Marquette University in Milwaukee. Helen worked with the Racine Unified School District until her retirement at the age of 70. In 1969, during her years with the school district, she helped to establish Camp Kinder, a day camp for youth with developmental disabilities that continues to this day.

Helen was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church, St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, both in Racine, and St. John's Catholic Church in St. Petersburg, Florida. She was a Green Bay Packer backer extraordinaire, an avid tailgater, a world-wide traveler, and a champion of children with diverse needs.
