County Man, 59, Dies of Gun Wound
A county man died in a local hospital at mid-afternoon Monday from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in his head, according to Sheriff Erwin Voss.
Martin Betthauser, 59, Midway, died in St. Francis Hospital where he was rushed by county traffic police.
Mr. Betthauser was at home alone. His mother-in-law and a neighbor woman found him fatally injured on the floor of his bedroom. The 410 caliber shotgun was on the bed.
Highway police were called at 2:45 p.m. The sheriff and a deputy arrived at the scene at 2:45 p.m. The sheriff was notified by the hospital at 3:35 p.m. that Betthauser was dead.
The sheriff's department reported Betthauser has been under care of a doctor. He reportedly was laid off from his job three weeks ago.
Mr. Betthauser was born March 6, 1900 in Tunnel City. He had been station agent at the Midway depot for the North Western Railroad for 20 years until the station closed recntly. He had served as an agent and telegrapher in various stations for a total of 42 years
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Order of Railroad Telegraphers and the Holy Name Society of St. Patrick's Church in Onalaska.
His former wife, the former wife, the former Esther Moran, died in 1945. In 1946 he married Catherine Guilder.
Survivors include his wife; a son Gerald, by his first wife; a son, Joesph, and two daughters, Mary and Paricia, by his second marriage; his mother, Mrs. Mary Betthauser of Racine; four brothers, Leo of West Salem, Oscar of Independence, Anthony of Tunnel City and Lester of La Crosse; one sister, Mrs. Bordon (Helen) Bishop of Racine and several nephews and nieces. His father and three brothers preceded him in death.
Funeral services wuill be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Patrick's Catholic Church, the Rev. John Mauel officiating. Bural will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Tomah. Friends may call at Fossum Funeral in Onalaska Wednesday afternoon and evening with the Rosery to be at 8 p.m.
Dr. Michael Watunya, La Crosse county coroner, said no inquest will be held.
