Named for the Native American burial mounds that predated the modern cemetery, Mound Cemetery was dedicated on June 3, 1852. It was created as a replacement for the first public cemetery in Racine, which was located at the present site of Winslow Elementary School. While the search for a site for the new cemetery was underway, a group of residents decided to create a private cemetery. They founded Evergreen Cemetery, which was located just south of what is now the DeKoven Center along Lake Michigan. Due to erosion along the lakeshore, the Evergreen Cemetery site proved to be unsuitable, and burials from both that cemetery and the older public cemetery were moved to Mound Cemetery. Originally consisting of 16 acres, the cemetery currently contains about 58 acres bounded by West Boulevard, Kinzie Avenue, Horlick Park Drive, 12th Street, and Washington Avenue.
Mound Cemetery is the site of the office for both this cemetery and nearby Graceland Cemetery, both of which are owned by the City of Racine. The office is located just inside the entrance on West Boulevard.
