Son William Elkin

ABEL ELKIN was living In family number 762 when the 1860 census was taken. He was born on Feb. 22, 1837 in Green County and was the son of William and Lucy (Davis) Elkin. He was the grandson of Abel and Polly (Skagga) Elkin of Green County. She was the daughter of William "Squire" Skaggs, who was a Revolutionary War soldier. Abel's maternal grandfather was John Davis of Hart County, who is buried in the Mt. Sherman cemetery. William Elkin settled near Mt. Sherman in LaRue County in the 1840's and was an early member of the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church. Abel enrolled in the Union Army in Capt. Bayne's Company F, 15th Ky. Infantry on Dec. 114, 1861. He was enrolled by Aaron Bayne at Camp Sherman and Abel was described at enlistment as 5 ft. 8-1/2 inches tall, fair skin, blue eyes and light hair. He saw action in the battles at Perryville and Stone River. He died Dec. 10, 1863 in the hospital at Chattanooga, Tennessee of dysentery. Private Elkin is buried at Mt. Sherman by his parents.
