BRIGHAM CITY-- Newell Burnell Perry was born January 1, 1936 in Provo, Utah and departed this earthly existence on Tuesday, February 17, 2015 at his home in Brigham City after a courageous battle with inclusion body myositis.

He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served in numerous callings of leadership including High Council, Seventy (ward missionary), and two different bishoprics. He also served for over seven years at the Ogden Temple as an ordinance worker. At church he was known by the younger children as the candy man. He always had candy treats for the kids at church in his pocket.

He loved working with the Boy Scouts of America where he served in various positions for 63 years. He helped run a scout troop at the Intermountain Indian School over 50 years ago. He was a Wood Badge graduate and received the Award of Merit and the Silver Beaver award. He always encouraged any of the scout aged boys he was around to earn their Arrow of Light and Eagle Scout awards including his sons and grandsons.

He worked for ATK/Thiokol for 32 years and prior to that he worked for Geneva Steel and Ironton in Utah County for 5 years. He ran a local part time vacuum and sewing machine repair business out of his home for nearly 46 years in Brigham City and had loyal customers throughout the state. One job he loved as a young man was working at the Spudnut Company of Provo. That job led him to reconnect with his future wife after they had briefly met in Bicknell while he was on a scout trip in the area.

He married his eternal companion Claudia Jean Mangum in the Manti Temple on July 22, 1955. They have been married for nearly 60 years. They are the parents of 5 children, 15 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren with one more expected in June.

He is survived by his wife, four children, fifteen grandchildren, and nearly thirteen great-grandchildren, one sister, one brother. He was preceded in death by his son Bradley Newell Perry, parents Burnell and Alene Perry, in-laws Clifford and Elizabeth Mangum, a sister Norma Nell Harris, and a brother Rex Perry.

The family wishes to thank Encompass Hospice and nurses Kami and Lori for the wonderful care given during his illness.

Funeral services will be held at the Brigham City 11th Ward, 506 S. 200 E. Brigham City on Saturday, February 21, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. with a viewing from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to the service and from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday February 20 at Gillies Funeral Chapel, 634 E. 200 S. in Brigham City.
