The fourth and youngest child of John Marshall (about 1761 to 1806) and Catharina Truby Rohrer Marshall (about 1764 to 1806); reared by her uncle and aunt, Dr. Simeon Hovey and his wife Mary Ann (Polly) Truby Hovey after the 1806 death of her parents in Lancaster, Ohio; the wife of Elisha Hope Bailey (1805-1883) and the mother of seven children. The red brick Bailey home is still standing in the village of Parker, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, not far from where the Baileys lie buried. The land on which it stands (as well as the land on which the adjacent Parker Presbyterian Church and Cemetery are located) was her bequest from her uncle, Dr. Hovey, at the time of his death in 1837.

She was a granddaughter of Col. Christopher Truby and Sybilla Bauman of Greensburg, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania;
and of Andrew and Mary Eaton Marshall of Franklin County, Pennsylvania.

Mary Ann Marshall Bailey was the youngest child and only daughter of John Marshall (about 1761-1806) and Catharina Truby Rohrer Marshall (about 1763-1806). Although this obituary says she was born in Ohio, she was born in Greensburg, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. The family moved to New Lancaster, Ohio, in late 1805 or early 1806, and her parents died there in the summer of 1806. She was reared by her uncle and aunt (see below), Dr. Simeon Hovey and his wife, Mary Ann "Polly" Truby Hovey.

Gone To Rest


After a peaceful life of 90 years, Mrs. Mary Ann Marshall Bailey died Sunday morning last at the old homestead, Second ward, Parker in the 91st year of her age. She was born in Lancaster, Ohio, Nov. 24, 1804. Her parents died while she was very young and at the age of two years she was brought to this town and reared by her aunt, Mrs. Mary Ann Hovey, where she remained until her marriage to Elisha Hope Bailey, Aug. 13, 1834. The family resided most of the time in Parker, a short time in Butler and Kittanning. A family of seven children were born in the old homestead, Elizabeth R.—Mrs. Kennedy, deceased; Simeon Hovey—deceased; Mary Ellen—Mrs. Purvis, of Butler; Katharine A.—Mrs. R. Balph; Elisha Hope; Sara B—Mrs. T. Cooper, all of this place; also Samuel J. who died in infancy.

Mrs. Bailey and her husband were members of the U.P. Church, and to their efforts the society owed much of the success it attained. Mr. Bailey preceded his wife to the world beyond about eleven years ago. For the past six years the deceased was afflicted with softening of the brain, yet in many matters she retained her memory to the last. About three years ago she lost her sight and consequently required more care and attention thereafter. The last two months she was confined to her bed and was as helpless as a babe.

Mrs. Bailey was of a strong, robust nature, jovial disposition, kind hearted, but firm. She was the last member of the old Marshall family, her brother John preceding her about five years ago, and her half-sister, Mrs. Elisha Robinson, Sr., several years previously.

The funeral was held at the old homestead, conducted by Rev. Dr. McKee of the U. P. Church of Butler, Pa., assisted by Rev’s J. W. Miller of the Presbyterian church and M. Miller of the M. E. Church and Presbyterian Choir of this town.

The interment was in the U. P. Cemetery [now known as the GAR Cemetery in Parker] alongside of her earthly partner. At the services were all the members of the family, also 23 out of 29 grandchildren, and a large number of near relatives and friends. There is one great-grandchild living, Hope, a daughter of J. N. Bailey of Monett, Mo., and one dead, Lewis Leonard, a son of A. B. Cooper of this place, who folded its infant hands to eternal rest last month.

Thus has passed away the last member of the oldest family of the founders of Parker. Peace to her ashes
