Hermie Eletha Birchfield was born on 21 April 1906 in Haywood county, North Carolina, the daughter of Lee Turner Birchfield (1874-1954) and Elizabeth Catherine (Eliza) Reece Birchfield (1883-1962). She was married to Homer Ethelbert Allen (1905-1978) about 1924 in North Carolina. They had two sons and two daughters. They lived in Haywood county, NC for many years before relocating to Corpus Christi, Texas. She was widowed in 1978. She later moved to St. Petersburg, FL. She died on 21 September 1996 in St. Petersburg at the age of 90. She was interred at Memorial Park Cemetery.
