Professional Boxer. He was dubbed "Battling Nelson" a rough and tumble fighter who lacked technique, but hit hard, was aggressive and won matches due to his remarkable stamina. From 1896 to 1920, he fought in 135 professional bouts and became Lightweight World Champion on July 4, 1908, retaining his crown until defeated on February 22, 1910. He retired in 1923, with a career record of 73 wins, 40 knockouts, 24 draws and 30 loses. Rated as the 5th best Lightweight Fighter of all time, he was enshrined in the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1992.
