Served as colonel and commanding officer, F&S, 41st Ohio Volunteer Infantry
Enlisted: 19 Sept 1861; mustered out: 4 Jun 1864.

Served as captain and commanding officer of Co. C, 16th Ohio Volunteer Infantry (3 mo.), from April to August, 1861. He then raised Co. C, 41st Ohio Volunteer Infantry, which he led as its captain and later was promoted to lieutenant colonel and colonel of the regiment. While leading the 41st OVI, he was wounded in the left leg at Shiloh and again in the same leg at Missionary Ridge, Tennessee, where the leg had to be amputated. He was discharged on June 4, 1864, but was soon commissioned as a Major in the Veterans Reserve Corps. For his service and sacrifice he was breveted Brigadier General in 1865. Having just started as a lawyer before the war, he resumed his practice after the war and was for a time an Ohio state legislator.
