Born the fourth of eight children to Tekla and Harry Pouchak Sr. at home in Glen location just south of Chisholm MN, Attended Glen grade school then the Hibbing school system, graduating H.S.in 1936.
John served a a mason's helper with the Brittmount CCC Camp #715 in 1936-37. Continued with Hibbing Vo-Tech School for electricity and radio repair in 1937, then employed as an electrician by the Oliver Mining Company in 1938. After USS lay-off's he traveled to Flint MI for work returning to MN in 1940 after his 10 YO brother's drowning.
John was drafted into the US Army in 1942, trained as a radioman in TX and CA, where he attained the rank of Tech Sgt. Technician Grade 5. Went to Europe in 43'.He served in the US First Army, 9th Corps,then Ninth Army,Battery C of the 882nd Field Artillery Battalion, as a Tech Sgt. T4 in the main artillery unit. He arrived after D-Day in (Normandy) France 6/44 continued with the campaign through Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, through Belgium, Holland, to (Schotten)Germany 5/11/45. Was was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with five bronze battle stars, World War II Victory Medal and one overseas service bar. He remained in Europe until the fall of 1945 and was discharged in Oct of that year.
Upon Army discharge he returned to Chisholm, married Florence Chernugal and had 3 children, Carol, John and Michael. John worked 37 years for USS as an electrician, radioman, and instrumentation Tech. He built his house in Chisholm in 1948 doing most of the work on his own.
John had a real soft spot for helping children in need out. Often he would encouraging or expose education to other, especially in electrical fundamentals and theory. There are multiple neighborhood kids along with his sons that made a career of electronics/ engineering due to his influence. Being a true renaissance man and voracious reader, he was talented in many fields and subjects.
He was a devoted family man that never spoke foul language. He loved traveling around the country and exploring the forests,waterways and nature. Was a student of the sciences always learning and sharing that knowledge with others.
