Carl J. Clausen, 75, of Lewiston, died Thursday, June 13, 2002, at Tri-State Health and Rehabilitation Center in Clarkston.

Carl was born Feb. 10, 1927, at Burke, S.D., to Carl E. Clausen and Beulah (Hedeen) Clausen. At a young age, he moved with his family to the Lewiston-Clarkston area. He attended schools in Lewiston and Clarkston.

At age 17, when he was a senior at Clarkston High School, he enlisted in the Navy. His training was at the Farragut Naval Training Center in northern Idaho. During training, he sustained a back injury at fire school and spent many months at a hospital there.

His first assignment was on the USS California, which had been sunk at Pearl Harbor and was later raised and recommissioned. He came aboard the USS California at Bremerton. After his discharge, he returned to the Clarkston area, where he worked for farmers in Pomeroy, and then went to Spokane and attended Kinman Business College.

He worked at the Potlatch Mercantile, First Bank & Trust in Moscow, and First Security Bank in Genesee, Moscow, and Lewiston. He also worked at the Golden Gate National Bank in San Francisco. Carl spent several years in Indianapolis and in the Chicago area working for Marjoniers Brothers.

After returning to the Lewiston area, he worked for Moscow Sheet Metal, R.A. Hansen Co. in Palouse, and Pioneer Sign Co. in Lewiston.

He started his own business building metal pickup canopies and then later moved to Meridian, Idaho, where he worked for Golden West Sign Co. in Boise.

Carl retired in 1985 and moved to his cabin at Cave Bay at Coeur d'Alene. In 1992 the mild winters in the valley drew him back to Lewiston, where he lived in the Orchards. He enjoyed keeping busy with gardening, taking care of his fruit trees, and working in his metal and wood shop. Although dementia started to steal his memory, he continued to keep busy until it took its toll and he entered the care center about 18 months ago.

He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and Trinity Lutheran Church.

Carl and Luthena Leffingwell were married in Lewiston. They had three children and were later divorced.

On Nov. 3, 1966, he married Norma "Sammy" Sampson at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lewiston. She survives at the family home.

Two brothers, Melvin Clausen and Richard Hedeen, and a grandson, Brian Clausen Kostal, preceded him in death.

Survivors' names omitted per findagrave policy.

All will miss a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend.

Burial will be at Normal Hill Cemetery with a luncheon to follow at Trinity Lutheran Church, 920 Eighth Ave., Lewiston.
