DR. C. E. CARNEY, 79, PROMINENT PHYSICIAN, DIES AT INDIANAPOLIS

RITES HELD SATURDAY FOR LOCAL DOCTOR


Dr. Calvin E. Carney, 79, one of this county's most prominent citizens and a practicing physician for more than 50 years, died Thursday at Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis, following a long illness. Although Dr. Carney maintained a restricted practice of medicine in Delphi until the last, his health had been failing for a number of years.

Born in Cass County on May 23, 1868, he was the son of Robert and Lucy Carney. He attended Rush Medical School for two years and then graduated from the old Indiana University School of Medicine. Coming to this county in 1895, he set up practice in Pyrmont where he remained for six years, moving to Delphi in 1903. White at Pyrmont, he was married to Della Pettijean on November 10, 1897. Mrs. Carney died five years ago on June 18.

Prominent in social and medical circles, Dr. Carney was a member of the Delphi Presbyterian Church, the Masonic order Scottish Rite, the Carroll County and State Medical Societies.

Survivors are two sons, Dr. John Carney of Monticello, and Paul of Delphi; a daughter, Miss Ruth Carney, teacher in the Delphi schools; one sister, Mrs. Essie Beal of Logansport. A brother, Dr. John Carney was a practicing phycian here for a number of years.

The will of Calvin E. Carney was probated in Carroll circuit court Monday. He bequeathed all his personal property to his three children, Miss Ruth Carney, Paul Carney and Dr. John Carney.

He named is daughter, Ruth, as executrix, and directed her to reduce his personal property to cash as soon as advantageous and to make distribution of same to said three children. He also directed that she as executrix have full control of his real estate on the corner of West Main and Market street, the west one half of lot 32 in the original plot of the town of Delphi. The Income from said property to be held for a grandson, John R. Carney until he ready to enter college or until 21. The will was executed on july 24, 1943, and was witnessed by Joseph T. Ives and Florence Crawford. Ruth Carney qualified as executrix and gave bond for $25,000. Joseph T. Ives is attorney for the executor.
