Dr. JOHN R. CARNEY DEATH MONDAY WAS LOSS TO COMMUNITY

One of the best liked and most popular citizens of Delphi was taken from our midst, Monday morning, when Dr. John R. Carney, 55, died at 9:15 o'clock at the St. Vincent hospital at Indianapolis. Probably the most widely known doctor in Carroll county, as he treated patients for miles around. His death came as a severe shock to the residents of this community.

Dr. Carney, a skilled golfer, was taken ill last Wednesday while playing golf and last Saturday was taken to the hospital in Indianapolis. His death was caused by streptococcus infection in the blood stream. He had not been well for the past three years since he underwent an emergency operation for appendicitis.

Born on November 22, 1877, in Cass county on the Kokomo road, Dr. Carney was the son of Robert and Lucy Carney. He graduated from the Rush College in Chicago. For a number of years he practiced medicine at Pyrmont and for the past 17 years has been located here. His services were much in demand by a large number of people and his time was taken most of the time in performing work for others. He came to be loved in many homes in which he worked and his passing was mourned most fervently by them.

He was married on January 29th, 1904 to Fannie Robinson, a daughter of pioneer residents of the county. He was a member of the Presbyterian church, the Masonic Lodge, the American Legion and the Shrine.

He is survived by his widow, one daughter, Meredith, at home, one sister, Mrs. William Beale of Logansport, and one brother, Dr. Cal Carney of Delphi.

During the world war he served in the Medical department and was at Camp Riley in Kansas and at Camp Deven in Massachusetts. He was an active golfer and was one of the leading men in this sport in Delphi. He was also very active in Carroll county medical society.

He will probably be missed by more people because of his excellent medical service than would an ordinary person. Many people thought that they could not get well unless they had the services of Dr. Carney. His friendly personality and his willingness to serve and to help will be noticeably absent from this community from now on. It will be difficult to find some one to take his place.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Delphi Presbyterian church. Rev. C. J. Grimes and Rev. William Grant Smith officiated. Grimm and Sons were in charge. Burial in the Masonic cemetery.

The business houses all closed while the military funeral for Dr. J. R. Carney was being conducted which was one of the largest ever held here.

Many people had accentuated their love and respect for their friend and physician by sending floral tributes and these were banked about the casket at the church. Roy Clauser sant "In the Garden" and "The Old Rugged Cross", Mr. Edith Rutherford played organ. Those who carried the casket were: Messrs. A. H. Brewer, Paul Lostutter, Myron Ives, Guy Thomas, Ed Smock, Forrest Orr, Harvey Ellis and William Lucy.

Those who carried the flowers were: Mrs. E. O. Grimm, Mrs. Guy Thomas, Mrs. Myron Ives, Mrs. Charles Cartwright, Mrs. William Afflis, Mrs. James Goff, Mrs. J. H.
