Born NE of Indianapolis, Indiana in 1849, the family moved to Newark, Missouri before she was a year old. There she grew up in a large family. She had two siblings from her father's first marriage to Elvira Shaul, her namesake. She was the third of 10 children born to Jonathan H. Wright's second wife, Indiana Moore.

The Wright family farm in Shelby County is on the county line with Knox County. Her oldest brother was killed in the early days of the Civil War. The farm is now owned by Heartland Ministries, and the base for Pastor Charlie Sharpe.

Elvira met and married Ezekiel T. Reed in Brown County, Ohio in 1872. Ezekiel's first wife, the mother of his first 5 children, Isabella Rishforth passed away about 1870. Elvira probably met Ezekiel while visiting her aunt, Margaret Moore and her husband, William Myers, whos home sat directly between the Reed and Rishforth homes in Brown County, Ohio. Family stories state they moved from Ohio to Elvira's childhood home between Newark and Bethel, Mo. about 1881, was due to Elvira's severe allergies. Before 1890 they took a Homestead south of West Plains, Howell County, Missouri. Shortly after proving up on the homestead, they took out a mortgage. Within the year, in 1898, Ezekiel passed away and the farm was foreclosed on. In 1899, daughter Mattie Belle Reed, married Charles F. Cummings near Troy, Idaho, and the rest of the family soon followed. Many settled in either northern Idaho or Spokane, Washington. All but two of Elvira's 14 children are known and accounted for. The names of the other two, twins born premature, are not known. Elvira is buried next to her daughter, Lilly Rebecca "Becky" Reed and her husband Ben Cummings, and son, Orin Reed and his wife.
