John Callaway: Moving Westward

Submitted by Joann Callaway and first published in the 1987 CFA Journal

John Callaway (born Oct 28, 1791, in Kentucky was the son of Revolutionary soldier, James Callaway, Jr. and his wife Susannah, dau. of Stephen White.

John married 23 Feb. 1814, Clark County, Kentucky, Milly (b. 1787, Kentucky d. 7 Sept 1843, Cooper County, Missouri) dau. of Achilles and Mary/Polly (Bush) Eubank, and widow of William Callaway.

John and Elizabeth Callaway removed to Cooper County, Missouri about 1820. The 1850 census shows John Callaway (age 57) living alone in Booneville, Cooper County, Missouri.

John Callaway fought in the War of 1812 and filed for a 40-acre land grant on the basis of his war record, Nov. 26, 1850, Cooper County, Missouri. He filed a second time May 17, 1858, Mendocino County, California for 120-acre land grant. April 20, 1871 John Callaway filed for a pension using the form Declaration for a Pension Under Act of February 14, 1871, stating he married at Mendocino County, California, May 1859, Elizabeth Ackerman. On Nov. 9, 1871 he was granted an $8.00 a month pension.

John and Elizabeth Callaway are found in the 1860 and 1870 Mendocino County, California census (in 1870 his age is listed as 78 and his wife as 70). Although the 1860 census shows he had real estate valued at $1000, no land record was found for John Callaway in Mendocino Co., CA, nor was a probate record or cemetery record found. A search in Sonoma County, CA (which has some early records of Mendocino) failed to reveal any mention of John Callaway.

Charles Callaway (whose trip across the Oregon Trail in 1852 was in the 1983 CFA Journal, page 24, as told by his great, great granddaughter, Lori Callaway), was born 6 Mar. 1819, Clark County, Kentucky, son (probably the 2nd or 3rd child) of John and Milly Eubank Callaway.

He married first, 21 Dec. 1843, Cooper County, Missouri, Catherine Ardena, dau. of Presley Garrett Ware and his wife, America Corbin. Catherine was born 10 Feb. 1826 Clark County, Kentucky, and died 15 Jan. 1845, Cooper County, Missouri. Charles and Catherine Callaway had a son, John Presley Callaway b. 21 Nov. 1844, Cooper County, Missouri, d. July 1935 Eugene, Oregon; m. 4 May 1865 in Eugene, Susan Rush & had 6 children.

Charles married second in Cooper County, Missouri, 15 Apr. 1846, Catherine's sister, Elizabeth Jane Ware, who was born 15 May 1828, Clark County, Kentucky. Their son, Charles Henry Callaway was born 19 May 1850, Cooper County, Missouri (d. 26 Dec. 1937 Eugene, Oregon; m. 18 June 1872 Madora Ann Richardson & had 4 children) In 1852 they traveled across the Oregon Trail, arriving in Oregon 25 Sept. 1852 and their next child, James H. Callaway was born 6 Oct. 1852 near Portland, Oregon (d. 26 Mar. 1924 Eugene, Oregon; m. 22 Oct 1874 Mary E. Bailey & had 6 children).

Charles and Elizabeth settled in Lane County, Oregon and there had 5 more children. Elizabeth Ware Callaway died 23 Dec. 1903 in Eugene, Oregon and her husband, Charles died 25 Aug. 1904 in Eugene, Oregon. Charles Callaway is said to have been 6 foot 2 inches tall, weighing about 190 pounds. In their latter years, Elizabeth suffered abdominal pains and Charles would pick her up and walk the floor to comfort her.

David Barton Callaway was probably the youngest child of John and Milly Eubank Callaway. He was b. 1830, Missouri; d. 19 Jan 1915, Lane County, Oregon age 85. In 1860 he was in Mendocino County, California, listed as age 29, born Missouri, single and a musician. Mrs. Lillian Williams of Oakridge, Oregon (g/dau. of John Presley Callaway) says David Barton Callaway started on the trip across the plains with his brother, Charles, but took the turnoff to California, where he lived 30 years before moving to Lane County, Oregon. His death certificate names John Callaway as his father (mother not named) says he was a widower, and his occupation was tailor. Family tradition says he lost all of his family in a flood. Some of the grandchildren of Charles Callaway remember "Uncle Bart" as a very well dressed man and recall how they loved to have him visit as he would play his banjo and tell them tales.

John and Milly Eubank Callaway had another son and three daughters. Could any of these Callaway women be daughters of John and Milly Eubank Callaway; Susan Callaway b. about 1816 Kentucky; d. 1857 Missouri, m. 3 Oct 1842 John Keegan in Cooper County, Missouri; Agnes Callaway, who m. 23 May 1838 James Tankersly in Cooper County, Missouri; Martha Callaway who married Mr. Thomas?

John's children would have been born between 1815-1830 (the older ones in Kentucky, and those born after 1820 in Missouri) and probably resided in Missouri or one of the western states. There has been mention of a picture of John Callaway, which is probably in the possession of a descendant of John Presley Callaway. If this picture could be located, a copy of it could be made for other descendants of John Callaway.

Editor's Note - There is an article in the Sep 2009 CFA Newsletter about the children of Milly Eubank Callaway and her first husband, William Callaway.
