Elizabeth Ann Williamson Adkins was born in Madison county, Indiana, the second daughter of Edward and Mary Williamson (Shields). Her early youth was in Warren county, Iowa. She then came to Clarke county, Iowa with her family. Her entire life was an inspiration to all who knew her and came within the influence of her beautiful character. Elizabeth married William Henry Adkins on February 11, 1866 in Hopeville, Iowa. They would have 11 children born between Oct. 1866 and Aug. 1890, five daughters and six sons.

Elizabeth watched Iowa grow from the days of vast untilled prairies and woodland to cultivated farms and the site of many cities, towns and villages. She typified in every way the strong and sturdy character of a pioneer that others might enjoy the fruits of her labor. With a kindly smile she walked the pathway of life, doing unto others as she would have them do unto her.
