Chris Decker Passed Away Last Sunday

He Came to Monticello in 1890 And Lived on the Little Farm East of Town 38 Years

The unexpected death of Chris Decker occurred at his home on North Main street last Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. He had been in fair health until last Friday when he was taken ill and his death occurred three days later. Mr. Decker was a native of Germany and was born in the town of Varel, providence Oldenburg, January 31, 1859.

He was married to Maria Reuter in the same town March 6, 1883. They lived in Germany seven years and then emigrated to the United States, settling in Monticello in 1890. Mr. Decker secured employment with O. J. Lawrence. It fell to his lot to assist in making sorghum for Mr. Lawrence.

Four years later Mr. and Mrs. Decker went on a farm of their own and thereafter purchased the Charles Little farm on primary 151 east of Monticello. They lived on that farm 38 years and came to Monticello December 1, 1919 - 18 years ago. They purchased a home on Main street.

During the time that Mr. Decker lived in Germany he had employment with a gas company but since coming to the United States had always been a famer. There were four children born to this union. Mrs. Freda Martinsen of Lovell township, Mrs. Anna Rittmer of Central City, and Chris and Will who live on the home farm. Mr. Decker was the last member of his father's family.

He was a member of the Reformed church of Monticello. Funeral services were held in that church Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock. They were in charge of Rev. Armin Tendick and burial was made at Oakwood.
