Miss Bladel City Resident, Succumbs at 86
Miss Bessie A. Bladel, 86, 1720 Lincoln Ct., Rock Island, died this morning at Oak Glen Home, Coal Valley.
Funeral services will be held at the Knox-Larson Funeral Home, Rock Island, Tuesday at 1 p.m. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Rock Island.
Friends may call at the funeral home after noon Monday.
Miss Bladel was librarian for over 40 years at Rock Island Senior High School, retiring in 1953.
She was born Feb. 2, 1888 in Rock Island, the daughter of Charles F. and Anna Ludolph Bladel and was a life-time resident of the city.
Miss Bladel was a member of the Central Presbyterian Church, Rock Island, and formerly active in women's groups of the church. She was also a member of the Woman's Club of Rock Island, and a former member of the Blackhawk Hiking Club.
Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Herman Willer, Rock Island, and two brothers, Harold C. of Garden City, N.Y., and Richard R. of Rock Island.

She graduated from Augustana College in Rock Island in 1910 at 22 years of age, and worked as a librarian and later as a teacher. A year after Bessie graduated from Augustana, her father was murdered in his grocery store. Her brother, Frank, was working in the back of the store and heard the command, “Put ‘em up” and then the loud gunshot. During much of her career, Bessie was a librarian at Rock Island High School. In her honor the library at the high school is now called the Bessie Bladel Library.
