Charles F Bladel, 66 years old, was shot and killed by bandits at 8:30 Saturday night in his grocery store at 1201 12th Street Rock Island. Three men, one of whom shot Bladel with a sawed-off shotgun, escaped in an automobile which had been parked near the store. The bandits left the store without taking any money, altho Bladel had placed 2 bags of money on his desk shortly before he was shot.
Late last night police had not found a witness who saw the shooting
The most authentic information given to police was that offered by Frank Bladel, the dead man's son, who was in the rear of the store at the time of the shooting, and Dale Seaton, 14 year old. Officers in every city and town within a radius of 160 miles were notified to be on the lookout for the bandits

Dispatch - Monday - December 13, 1926 (partly transcribed)
Mr. Bladel was a native of the county, having been born in Rock Island on April 4, 1861, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Bladel, pioneers who came to this community before the Civil war. He later went into the grocery business with Fred Hodges on Fourth avenue between Sixth and Seventh streets. The store was operated under the name of Hodges and Bladel.
He remained a partner of Mr. Hodges' for nine years. Eighteen years ago he erected the building in which he was murdered and started business there.
Was Alderman: Mr. Bladel was a member of the city council from 1890 to 1895 representing the First ward. He was a member of the Franklin volunteer hose company which had its headquarters on Third street between Third and Fourth avenues in the early days of Rock Island.
