Martha Ellen Smith Harvey was born in Green county, Ohio, March 7th, 1833. She was married to Samuel C. Harvey in Cedar county, Iowa, Feb. 13, 1848. To Mr. and Mrs. Harvey were born twelve children, six sons and six daughters. Three of the daughters died in early childhood, one son at the age of 28. Another son, John L. Harvey of Seward, died in 1908, and another daughter, Mrs. E. M. Taylor, in 1909.
The early years of her married life were spent in Muscatine, Ia. Later the family located at Letts and Albia, Iowa, and came to Seward in 1891.
Mrs. Harvey was a home maker and was remarkable in courage, cheerfulness and hopefulness. She united with the Presbyterian church at the age of sixteen and was active in church and Sabbath school work all through the years she was rearing the family and was a very regular attendant at chruch services until she was afflicted with deafness. She has been a constant sufferer for the past three months.
She died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. S. D. Atkins, in Seward early Saturday morning and the remains were taken to Muscatine, Iowa, for burial Monday, after short funeral services had been conducted at the home by Rev. Rohrbaugh of the Presbyterian church.
