James Barkelow, b. 3 Jul 1753, Kingwood Twp., Hunterdon Co.,NJ. - d. 24 Apr 1834(Probate date)(Will date-11 Mar 1834), West Buffalo Twp.,(Rand), Union Co.,PA. His surname was most often spelled "Bartlow" in tax records from 1794-1834. He was a private and fifer(forager & "lookout") in several Hunterdon Co.,NJ militia described as "Flying Camps" during the Rev. War(NA file #22097). He named Capt. Samuel Growendyck, and Capt. Rudolph Spangler, among others. No doubt his headstone would be among the many unreadable stones already listed in this cemetery.
James married three times and sired 11 children: William(d.y.), Francis, Elinor(m.Gill), James,Jr., Jane(m.Hixon), Elizabeth(m.Slear), Eleanor(m.McGinnis), John B., Van Rensselaer, B. Chambers, and Flora Ann(m.Murray). He lived about two miles north of Mifflinburg in West Buffaloe Township in a farming community now called Rand, which straddles the Hartley Township line.
