MT. PLEASANT, UT - James B. Staker, Sr., 79, farmer and wool grower of this city, died Saturday evening at the family home after a long illness.
Mr. Staker was born in Pleasant Grove on February 7, 1858, a son of Nathan and Eliza C. Burton Staker. The family moved to Mt. Pleasant in 1859, the father taking an active part in the Blackhawk war. Mr. Staker fed and fattened the first carload of fat lambs to be shipped out of Mt. Pleasant, in 1892 the planing mill firm of Hansen, Staker and Johnson began operations and also opened and owned a sawmill, and the firm later assisted in organizing the Queen City Roller Mills company. He was an active worker in the L. D. S. church and had served a two years mission in the Manti temple. He was the first president of the North Sanpete Farm Loan Association, serving until ill health forced his retirement. He had been president and at the time of his death was a director of the Burch Creek Irrigation company. Mr. Staker married Elizabeth Fechser in the Salt Lake Endowment house June 10, 1889.
Surviving are his widow and seven sons and daughters; Mrs. Cornelia S. Lund, Elida, J.Ben, J. Fred and Floss R. Staker, Mt. Pleasant; Dr. Ernest V. Staker, Ithaca, N. Y., and Mrs. Grace S. Mills, Provo; two sisters, Mrs. Eliza Jane Day and Mrs. Ellis D. Wilcox, Fairview; 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren,.
