Rebecca was the daughter of Jared Irwin and Lucretia Patterson
Steuben Advocate – May 11, 1887
Mrs. Gansvoort who died last Thursday night was born in Dansville, Dec.29th 1805, and was the oldest child of Jared Irwin and Lucretia Pattetson(sic). Her father was a merchant in Dansville, there being at that time only one other merchant there. Mr. Irwin's father was one of those who were killed at the massacre at Wyoming.
In 1818 Mrs. Gansevoort's father died, leaving her an orphan at the age of seven years, Mrs. Irwin managed her husband's business for nearly a year when she sold the balance of the stock of goods to the late Joshua Shepard, for many years a merchant in Dansville.
Mrs Ganesvoort attended school at Aurora for several years and in 1820 at the age of fifteen years was married to John R. Gansevoort, of Bath. They immediately took up their residence in Bath where Mrs. G. lived till her death, having spent a half century of her life on the west side of Pulteney square.
Eight children were born to them of whom three, James Gansevoort, of Oakland, California, Mrs. Mary Howell Hess, and Mrs. W. W. Allen survive.
The funeral was observed at the residence of Mr. W. W. Allen on Sunday last.
