Born June 23, 1830 in Bath, daughter of John R. and Rebecca Gansevoort. Mrs. Mary Gansevoort Hess has lived sixty-five years in her native village among the friends and relatives to whom she was endeared by many acts of kindness and charity, and her demise will leave a vacancy in a circle never to be filled.
She married Edward Howell, Jr., September 18, 1850, and after his death on January 16, 1862, she married Hiram R. Hess who died April 28, 1888. She was a devoted member of St. Thomas Church.
Her funeral was attended from her late residence Wednesday afternoon. Rev. W. C. Roberts, of Corning, officiating.
She is survived by her only daughter, Miss Mary Edwardina Howell, her sister, Mrs. W. W,. Allen, and her brother, Mr. James Gansevoort, of San Francisco, Cal.
