John Henry Phillips (Philipps Scottish spelling) was born in Scotland in 1850 and at age 12 arrived in the United States. He leaned his craft as carpenter in New Jersey and there at age 19 married his first wife Catherine. They lost their first child just before the baby's second birthday and John lost Catherine who died in 1885 at the young age of 35.

In 1887 John married Clara Van Rensselaer. Clara and John lost their first child Richard in 1890, baby Clara died 1891, but they had son Henry Joseph 1890 and daughter Florence Phillips Weems born 1897. John passed away in 1913 and Clara never remarried. Clara passed away in October of 1930 and was buried with John, Catherine, and the lost children of both wives.
