He had been in usual health and death was sudden and unexpected.
He was born June 16, 1946, at the Kingsville Community in Randolph County, a son to the late Clarence and Rosie Hamilton Flanagan.
On June 4, 1982 he was united in marriage to the former Alice Christena Wilt Phillips, who preceded him in death on June 1, 2003.
Survivors include one daughter; Rebecca Shaffer and husband Kevin of Oakland, MD, four step sons; Larry A. Phillips and wife Donna, Kenneth R Phillips and wife Marie, Michael J Phillips all of Belington, and Thomas H. Phillips of NJ, one step daughter; Anita K Phillips of Belington, three sisters; Lucille Spencer of Junior, Louise Esposito of Belington, and Mae Chapman of Melbourne, FL, and one brother Ray Flanagan of Hopemont, WV.
Grandchildren include ; Kody Shaffer, Christena Shaffer, David Shaffer, Greg and David Phillips, Amber Phillips, and Joey Phillips, and seven step grandchildren and two step great grandchildren.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was also preceded in death by six brothers; Stanley Flanagan, Amos Flanagan, Roger Flanagan, June Flanagan, Earl Flanagan, Paul Flanagan, and two sisters Betty Spencer, and Helen Flanagan.
Mr. Flanagan was a self-employed logger, and formerly was employed by Cook Logging.
He attended the schools of Randolph County, and was an avid hunter and gardener.
He also loved being in the outdoors and attended the Stringtown United Methodist Church.
He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
Friends will be received at The Talbott Funeral Home at 56 N Brandenburg St. in Belington from 5-9 on Thursday December 11, 2014 and again on Friday December 12, 2014 from 8-11 am the funeral hour when final rites will be conducted from the funeral home chapel with the Pastor Destry Daniels officiating and Pastor James “Oz” Gray assisting.
Interment will follow in the Stringtown Cemetery near Belington, WV.
