Rowena was the daughter of Clinton S. Brewer and Wilhelmina "Minnie" Tinnerman, who married on 7 Nov 1874 in Auglaize Co., Ohio. I found three siblings for her--an infant (b./d.1876), Elton Claude (1880-1849), and Gernard C. (b.1892). Rowena's mother Minnie reported both in 1900 and in 1910 that she had only had three children and that all had survived to that 1910 census year, so either she didn't acknowledge the infant that died in 1876, or it wasn't her child.

Rowena appeared with her family on the 1880 Census, living in Noble Township, Auglaize Co., Ohio. Her father Clinton, aged 28, was a farmer. Her mother Mena (aka Minnie), aged 26, was home with 1-year-old Rowena.

With no 1890 Census available due to the fire that destroyed the records, fast forward to 1899. On 5 Oct 1899 Rowena married John Winthrop Bissell in Auglaize Co., Ohio.

I found the couple on the 1900 Census, living in Noble, Auglaize Co., Ohio. John, aged 25, was working as a telegraph operator. Rowena, aged 23, reported that she had not yet had any children.

Their nest began to fill the following year when son Cushman B. arrived in 1901, followed by son Donald A. in 1902 and daughter Lura in 1904. Sometime after Lura's birth in 1904, the family relocated to Illinois.

By the time the 1910 Census came around, John and Rowena had set up housekeeping in Chicago, Cook, IL. That census year, they were living on N. Hamlin Ave. John, aged 34, was working as a general clerk in a law office. Rowena, aged 31, reported that the couple had had three children, and that all were living. At home with their parents were Cushman, aged 9, Donald, aged 8, and Lura, aged 6.

Daughter Erma A. joined the family in 1912.

The year 1919 would have been a sad one for John and his family. He lost his mother Hattie on January 18 and his father Elijah on June 13.

By the 1920 Census, John and Rowena had purchased a house at 4141 Lowell Ave. in Chicago. John, aged 45, was working as an attorney for a bank. Rowena, aged 41, was home with children Donald, aged 18, Lura, aged 16, and Erma, aged 8. Son Cushman had married wife Marion and they settled in nearly Evanston.

The Ancestry transcription of the 1930 Census record for this family was badly done, making them difficult to find. John, aged 54 and working in official banking, was transcribed as the daughter of Willy and Anna Schmidt. Rowena, aged 50, is unrecognizable in the transcribed version of her name, and she too was supposedly the Schmidt's child. Listed below their parents on the original record, but not grouped with them on the transcribed version were Donald, aged 28 and working as a bank employee, Lura, aged 26 and working as a stenographer for an advertising firm, and Erma, aged 19.

The following year would have been a sad one for Rowena. She lost both her parents that year, first her mother on 8 Jun 1931, then her father two days later on 10 Jun 1931.

John and Rowena were still at the 4141 Lowell Ave. residence in 1940. John, aged 64, was still practicing law. Rowena, aged 60, was keeping house. Still living at home with their parents were Lura, aged 36 and working as a secretary in a law office, and Erma, aged 29 and also working as a secretary, though I could not decipher where.

On 5 Oct 1949, John and Rowena would have celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.

Six years later, death parted the couple, claiming John in 1955 at age 81. Rowena had him laid to rest next to his parents in this cemetery. Rowena died in 1971 and she too was laid to rest here.
