The son of Elbert Jeter Sr. and Sarah Jane Irvine, he married Sara Jane Rankin on May 13, 1869 in Orleans, Orange Co., Indiana.

When the Civil War broke out, he served with Co. B; 33rd Regiment; Indiana Infantry Volunteers from September 1, 1861 to May 5, 1865 being induced as a Private and discharged as a 1st. Lt.

On March 13, 1865, while in command of foragers while getting corn, he and his men were captured by the enemy. He was released shortly there after on a prisoner exchange but only after he helped several of his men escape by cutting out a hole in the building floor (the building was raised up off the ground). Henry H. Jeter was laid to rest on August 10, 1921 in the burail plot he owned. The plot and headstone are shared with his wife, Sara Jane Rankin, son, Earl Meredith Jeter, granddaughter, June Dunnington, and daughter's, Frances Marion Jeter Dunnington and Clara Louise Jeter

He was also the father to, Martha Ethel Jeter Kraft, who was my great grandmother, Mary Rankin Jeter Dunnington, William Elbert Jeter, Alice Russell Jeter (died in Arcola, Illinois at 2 years of age), Harriet Edith Jeter Knauer, Infant Son Jeter, died in Arcola, Illinois.
