Mrs. Smith graduated from Gray High School in 1947 and was the first All-Star guard for the Winston-Salem City Schools. After several job offers, she went to work at Hanes Hosiery so she could continue to play basketball. She also worked for Western Electric and later retired from DD Bean and Sons.
Mrs. Smith lived her life with a great sense of humor, always making a bad situation into a positive one, and helping anyone in need. She also loved working in her yard. The spring and Christmas seasons were her favorites. The spring because she liked bright colors, new growth, and flowers blooming. The Christmas season was her all-time favorite. She loved giving gifts, so for this Christmas, instead of her giving, God gave her the greatest gift of all, eternal life. She is free of pain and suffering.
Mrs. Smith leaves behind the pride of her life: one daughter, Sherry (Don) Mains and one son, Mickey (Debbie) Smith; the joy of her life, three grandchildren: Kathryn Smith, Larry (Ashley) Mains, and Lauren Smith (fiancé, Corey Tramble); one sister, Nancy Mickey; two brothers, Jimmy Beck and Sammy (Glenda) Beck; two sisters-in-law, Eunice “Tot” Hailey and Brenda Walker; numerous nieces and nephews; and two dear young ladies, Megan and Kasie Welch.
A graveside service will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 13 at Crestview Memorial Park with the Rev. Gary Byrum officiating.
