Richard T. (Dick) Welter, a year 71-year West Chicago resident, passed away on June 27, 2008. He was born October 15, 1921, in Wheaton, IL, to Nicholas and Mary Welter. Dick was a devoted family man and loving husband of 51 years to his wife, Nancy (O'Connor) Welter; father to Evelyn (Dominic) DiBona of Aurora and Ted Welter of West Chicago. Before his marriage in 1947 [sic], he served in the CCC camp and as a 1st Class Boatswains Mate in the U.S. Coast Guard and was proud to be an American. After service, he married, had two children and worked for Owens-Illinois Glass Company for 19 years. After leaving Owens, he became a mail carrier, working in both Wheaton and West Chicago for the U.S. Post Office until 1982 when he retired. Dick was an outdoorsman who loved hunting, fishing, and trapshooting. He enjoyed frequenting gun shows with his son and friends. He had a great sense of humor and a sharp mind and loved to converse about current events and the stock market. In addition to his daughter, son, and son-in-law, he is survived by 4 sisters: Esther Klingberg, Batavia, Violet Begerman, North Aurora; Katherine Welter, Aurora; and Ann Kroning, Wheaton; his granddaughter, Jessica Rosenberg; her husband, Blake; two great-grandsons, Chase and Luke. He also is survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Upon Dick's request, no funeral or wake was held. A private celebration of his life will be held for family and friends by his children in July. Memorials in his honor may be directed to his favorite charity, The Salvation Army.
