CIVIL WAR VETERAN DEAD — Henry Chubb, 82 years of age, died at a local sanitarium Friday [15 June 1906] morning at 5 o'clock. His death was due to diseases incident to old age. His brother, Jerry Chubb, of Topeka, was notified of the the death, and funeral arrangements will not be made until he is heard from. As Henry Chubb was a veteran of the Civil War, it is likely that he will be buried at Fort Leavenworth.

Henry Chubb was born on 13 Jan 1827 in Halifax Township, Dauphin Co., Pennsylvania. He was the son of Henry Chubb and Nancy Miller Chubb. When young, he went to Iowa and then to Kansas. There he was a teamster, freighting lumber by mule trains from Leavenworth, Kansas to Santa Fe, New Mexico.
During the war, Henry served with the 14th Kansas Cavalry [probably an error - the military records indcate he served in the 15th Kansas Cavalry]. This regiment was organized in Nov 1863. After leaving its place of rendezvous at Fort Scott in Kansas, the regiment arrived in Fort Smith, Arkansas on 3 Dec 1863. The regiment had the responsibility of defending the line of the Arkansas River, participating in all the important campaigns and expeditions undertaken by troops serving in the Department of Arkansas from Dec 1863 through Jun 1865. During most of this time, the 14th Kansas Cavalry served in a region of the country destitute of supplies and far from a base. The soldiers often lived off diminshed rations of subsistence and forage, enduring many hardship. The regiment's final muster-out and payment occurred on 20 Aug 1865 in Lawrence, Kansas. [15th Kansas Cavalry had a different history. See below].
Henry Chubb never married and was cared for in his later years by his brother Jeremiah [Census records show he lived with brother Jacob, not Jeremiah, but Jeremiah is the brother listed on the record of the Old Soldiers Home]. He died 15 Jun 1906 in a Soldier's Home.

Henry Chubb III was born in Halifax or Halifax Township, Dauphin Co., Pennsylvania, 13 Jan 1827, the second oldest son of Henry Chubb Jr. and Nancy [Miller] Chubb. Henry Jr. was a Weaver by Occupation. The father, Henry Chubb Jr. is listed in the Census of 1830 as "Henry Cub Junior" of Halifax, Dauphin Co., Pennsylvania. The grandfather, Henry Chubb Sr. is listed in the Census of 1830 as "Henry Chubb", also of Halifax, Dauphin Co., Pennsylvania. Both Henry Sr. and Henry Jr. are heads of households and are either living together or as neighbor.
Henry Chubb III has not yet been located in the Census of 1850, when he would have been about 23 years old. His younger brother Jacob, who would have been 22, has also not been located. Their parents, Henry and Nancy Chubb of Halifax, Dauphin Co., appear in the Census of 1850 for Halifax, but the brothers Henry and Jacob are not there. An older brother, John Chubb, born about 1824, is living with the parents and is a Laborer by occupation. The next youngest brother, Jeremiah Chubb, born about 1833, is also living with the parents in Halifax [Township], Dauphin Co., Pennsylvania, and is listed as a Carpenter.
In 1855, Henry Chubb appears on a voter registration list in Domphan County, Kansas Territory.
In the census of 1860, Henry Chubb was listed as a Grocer and single and living with Olaf Engstrom, who was also single, and also listed as a Grocer. They were living in Rock Creek, Lawrence Co., Kansas, at the time.
Henry Chubb's address in 1863 at the time of Muster In for his Civil War service with the 15th Kansas Cavalry, was Mount Florence, Jefferson, Kansas.
In the Post-Civil War Census of 1870, Henry Chubb's occupation was Farmer. He was living alone in Rock Creek, Lawrence Co., Kansas.
In the Census of 1880, Henry was still a Farmer and single but now living with his brother Jacob and Jacob's family in Rock Creek, Jefferson Co., Kansas.
In the 1885 Kansas Census, Henry is listed as a Farmer and living in Rock Creek, Jefferson Co., Kansas, still living with his brother Jacob and Jacob's family.
In 1889, Henry is at the Leavenworth, Kansas, Home for Disabled Soldiers.
Henry Chubb has not yet been located in the 1890 Veteran's Census.
In the 1900 Census, Henry appears as an Inmate at the Government Hospital for the Insane in Washington, District of Columbia (it is possible that this is not the same Henry Chubb, but since he suffered from cirrhosis of the liver, alcoholism is likely, which may be a reason for him to be in a hospital for the Insane).
Henry's death location has not been determined. Also, no burial location has been found. [See news clipping above.]
