Samuel was the son of Henry and Nancy Miller Chubb. He married Sarah J. Lyter and the couple had 9 children. During the Civil War, Samuel served with Co. H, 192nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He enlisted in Harrisburg February 15, 1865, mustered into federal service there February 22 as a private and was honorably discharged with his company August 24, 1865, at Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. He was a farmer and carpenter.

In 1860, he was a carpenter living in Halifax Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 6" tall with dark hair and brown eyes.
