John A. Chance, Centralia, dies
Founder of Town's Telephone System Father of Well Known Manufacturer.

John A. Chance, 84, founder of the first telephone system in Centralia and father of A.B. Chance, president of the Chance Manufacturing Co., at Centralia, Mo., died at his home here this morning at 8:15. He had been in ill health for the past year and his condition had been serious since Tuesday.

Mr. Chance was one of the oldest business men in Centralia. He was born in Illinois but came to live in Missouri in 1881. He had lived in Centralia and Boone County since that time.

Mr. Chance established the first telephone system the town of Centralia had. This was in 1896. He continued to operate the system as the Chance Telephone Co., until about six years ago when the system was sold to the Bell Telephone Co. He had not been actively engaged in business since that time.

Besides the widow, the former Miss Adeline Sexton of Centralia, to whom he was married 62 years ago, Mr. Chance is survived by one son, A.B. Chance; one daughter, Mrs. Willis Fountain of Centralia, two sisters, Mrs. Elisha Sexton and Mrs. Tom Sexton, both of Tulsa, Okla.; and four brothers, E. B. Chance and Charles Chance, both of Los Angeles, Cal.; and Grover Chance of Tulsa, Okla.

Two grandchildren and two great grandchildren also survive.

Funeral prayer service was conducted with burial in the city cemetery.
