CARPENTER, Martha - Services will be held tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Parkview Mortuary Chapel Delano with Rev. John Foster officiating for Martha Carpenter, 80, of 605 18th Avenue, Delano, who died March 14. Interment will follow at North Kern District Cemetery. A native of Centralia, Mo., she moved to Delano in 1931. She was a member of first United Methodist Church of Delano. Survivors are 4 children, Dorothy DeForet of Encino; Donald L. Caprenter of Salinas and William G. Carpenter and Barbara R. Swarts, both of Bakersfield; 4 sisters, Margaret Redman of Casper, Wyo., Jane Jackson of Balboa Island, Frances Besack of Hemet, and Kathryn Kuhlman of Orange; 11 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Phillip, Michael, Randy and Dennis Carpenter and Steven and Mark Swarts.

Suggested edit: Afton Martha was the daughter of Garrison Hardcastle and Martha S. Neill Chance of Boone County, Missouri. She married Wilford Milton Carpenter on July 18, 1917 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. From this union were born four known children: Dorothy Esther DeForet, Donald Louis, William George and Barbara Ruth Swarts.
After Afton’s mother Martha passed in 1897, her father Garrison, age 64, gave up his three children from Martha for adoption, twins William and Margaret and Afton. In the 1900 Audrain Co, MO census, Afton and Margaret were shown as adopted by their Uncle George Rudd and Aunt Olevia Francis Neill Pool. Afton was listed as Alger, a male. After the 1900 census was recorded, Olevia Francis passes away on July 8, 1900. George passed in 1920.
In the 1900, 1910 and 1920 Callaway Co, MO census, brother William Chance is living with his Uncle Samuel and Aunt Millie Neill Robison as a nephew. They passed away in 1927 and 1930. William was a farm laborer, grocer and remained single. He passed in 1950 from a ruptured peptic ulcer.
In the 1900 Monroe Co, MO census, their father, Garrison Chance, is living with his brother-in-law John Wesley Finney and his sister Elizabeth in Monroe City, MO. The Finneys’ owned a hotel. About 1907, Garrison moves to Tulsa, OK.

In the 1910 Boone Co, MO census, Afton Ames is listed as adopted by Lewis D and Linnie Ames in Columbia, MO. He was a Harvard professor teaching at the Univ of MO.
In the 1910 Callaway Co, MO census, sister Margaret is listed as Margaret Neill, an orphan, and living with Arthur and Anna Neill. (Arthur used to be a neighbor to George Pool in Audrain County, MO and moved to Callaway County, MO).
Afton Martha Chance Pool-Ames moved from Columbia, MO to Tulsa, OK where her father now lives and her future marriage in 1917 in Tulsa, OK. Her second adoptive father, Lewis Darwin Ames, moved to Los Angeles, CA and passed away in Delano, Kern Co, CA in 1955. Afton Carpenter moves from Tulsa, OK to Gillette, Campbell Co, WY (birth of two children) to Casper, WY (birth of two more children) to Delano, CA in 1931 and passed away in Delano, Kern Co, CA in 1977.
In the 1920 Callaway Co, MO census, Margaret Neill is a boarder with two other ladies in Fulton, Callaway Co, MO working as a stenographer at a local college.
Their father, Garrison passed away in Tulsa, OK in 1922, Age 99.
In the 1930 Campbell Co, WY census, Margaret has followed her sister to Campbell Co, WY and is married to Joseph Stephen Sesna with two children. She passes away in Sheridan, WY in 1993. Age 99.
