Lesser Body Discovered in Thompson

The body of John Lesser, 46, Loveland man who drowned last Tuesday, June 14, with a companion, Harold Hudson, 38, also of Loveland, was discovered early today lying in a sand-bar eddy in the Thompson river, southeast of Loveland. The body was about a mile and a half east of King’s corner and an estimated 20 50 22 miles, river course, from the point in the Big Thompson canyon where the two men drowned.

They were drowned when their auto fell into the river when a private bridge over the Big Thompson river collapsed under the weight of their car. Hudson’s body was found four miles downstream about an hour after the accident.

Services Held

Private funeral services were held for Lesser this afternoon at 3:30 o’clock at Lakeside burial park. Arrangements were made at the Kibbey mortuary. Lesser is survived by his wife, Julia, and nine children.

The body was first discovered this morning by George Pfeif, whose pasture land extends to the river. Pfeif had gone to the river to mend fences. His ranch is on the north side of the river.

From his side of the stream, he noticed an object lying partly in view near the sandbar. He could not tell for certain whether the object was a body. He drove to the C.M. Brownwood ranch, on the opposite side of the river and he and Brownwood went to the spot and found the body. They pulled it from the sandbar across a shallow channel to the Brownwood side of the stream and notified police and firemen here.

Clothing Gone

The body was devoid of all clothing except for the right shoe. It was battered and bruised and had several cuts on the head, legs and arms; but it was in fairly good condition to due immersion in the cold water of the flood-swollen stream.

The party that went to the spot and retrieved the body was composed of Fire Chief Lou Gibbs, Firemen William Simpson and Floyd Thompson, and Chief of Police C.K. Steele and Marvin Weaver of the Kibbey Funeral Home.

The body of Hudson was buried Friday at Neosho, Mo.

A pieces of Lesser’s shirt was found Saturday snagged on a willow limb several miles downstream in the river from the spot where he drowned.

Sunday, members of the Loveland fire department thoroughly explored the shores of Lake Loveland in two boats in their search for Lesser’s body. They also checked the headgates at Barnes ditch which feeds water into Lake Loveland.

Lesser’s body had been the object of a search by scores of officers , firemen and volunteers since he drowned six days ago.
