Franklin was a blacksmith by trade. He stayed with his parents, helping on the family cattle ranch at Pleasant Valley, Arizona, outside of Globe, until his marriage to Elizabeth Wilson Price. One year after his marriage, the Apache raid happened at the Middleton Ranch. In 1885 he left Globe for Wenatchee where he and brother Alfred "Willis" opened a sawmill.
Franklin was killed in a sawmill accident when he was trying to lift the carriage in the sawmill back on the tract, the lever he was using slipped, throwing him onto the moving saw, killing him instantly. His widow Elizabeth, sold her interest in the mill to her brother-in-law. Franklin's grave is very near the spot where he died.
