Kathryn Elizabeth was a daughter of Lucian Hanks and Anna "Annie" Greene (nee Brown) Ervin. Lucian was an insurance agent and the family moved quite a bit while Kathryn was a girl. After the death of her mother, Annie, in Richmond, Virginia, her father moved the family up to Alexandria.

Kathryn married John Gooding Smith Jr on 13 September 1924 in Alexandria, Virginia. They had 2 children; Gloria Gooding and John Ervin. John left the family, and they were divorced on 18 May 1939.

Kathryn would marry Stanley Lewis Brooks about 1944. They had a daughter, Elizabeth.

Kathryn Elizabeth Brooks died on April 9, 1983 at Hospice of Northern Virginia. Survived by husband Stanley, children Gloria, John and Betty, 9 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and a niece, Patsy Lozupone. Funeral service held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, corner of Duke and S. Pitt Streets, Alexandria on Wednesday, April 13, 1983 at 2 p.m. Interment at Mt. Comfort Cemetery.
