DIREL FYFFE
1932 - 2014

Direl Fyffe, retired pastor of West Liberty Mennonite Church, died on November 19, 2014, in Lexington, KY., at the age of 82.

Direl was born on January 28, 1932, to Robert and Minnie Fyffe in Mill Branch Relief, KY., in Morgan County.

Sixty-five years ago, at the age of 16, he started planning for Heaven and fishing for men. He pastored several churches including Paint Cliff Mennonite Church and Crockett Mennonite Church; and founded West Liberty Mennonite Church where he pastored for many years before retiring. He was a committed Christian and shared his faith any time he could, including at the hospital where he was a chaplain. He provided for his wife and six children by being a superintendent for Frederick and May Lumber and Construction Company for many years.

He is remembered as a devoted husband, loving father, doting grandfather, and loyal friend. Direl Fyffe was many things to many people. He was frugal and thrifty and couldn't stand for anything to go to waste. Storage buildings full of unwanted stuff stand as a testament to his love of making things work from other people’s junk. He was a lover of cats, though he would tell you that he
wasn't. He was a con-artist to his grandchildren and would hide money in his socks so they would have to rub his feet to find it. He is an ever present force in the lives he has touched. He will be missed.

Direl is preceded in death by his parents, Robert Jason and Minnie Cantrell Fyffe, two brothers, seven sisters, his son Joseph Ray Fyffe, and his first wife, Polly M. Worthy Fyffe.

He is survived by his wife, Bertha Fannin Fyffe, five children, Esther and Lee Cain of West Liberty, James and Cindy Fyffe of Sandy Hook, Rebecca (Becky) and Stephen Stoltzfus of West Liberty, Michael and Lisa Fyffe of West Liberty, and Mary Fyffe Downey of West Liberty, two step-sons, Stephen Dale and Lisa Fannin of Newport News, VA., and Timothy and Joanne Fannin of Newport News, VA., and
sixteen grandchildren, Marvin Cain, Joseph and Tina Fyffe and three sons, and two daughters, Josh and Annette Fyffe and one son and two daughters, Rachel Fyffe and two sons, Nicole and Dean Smith and two sons, James Gideon Fyffe and one son, Sarah and David Allen and two sons, Matthew and Rachel Davis and three daughters, Christina and Patrick Smith and one son and one daughter, Mikie and Emily Fyffe; Jennifer Downey, David Downey, Katie Fannin, Kyle Fannin, Pearl Fannin, Alex Fannin.

A funeral is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, November 23, 2014, at Herald & Stewart & Halsey Chapel, with Minister Steve Stoltzfus and Pastor Josh Fyffe officiating. Interment in the Paint Valley Memorial Gardens, Crockett, KY.

Pallbearers will be: Mikie J.Fyffe, David Downey, James Gideon Fyffe, Marvin James Cain, Patrick Smith, Matt Davis, Dean Smith and Skyler Smith.
