Rexford D. Downing 67, of 1836 28th St., Rock Island, died at 2 yesterday afternoon in Oak Glen Home, Coal Valley, after an extended illness. He had resided in the home 13 months.
Services for Mr. Downing will be at 1:30 Monday afternoon in Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island. The Rev. Kenneth M. Hooe, pastor of Memorial Christian Church, Rock Island, will officiate, and burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 until 5 and from 7 until 9 tomorrow.
Mr. Downing was born July 6, 1896, in Andrew, Ia., a son of Frank and Ida Downing. At an early age he moved with the family to Rock Island. he attended Rock Island schools.
In 1917, he married Mary Graves. She died in 1933. He married Katherine L. Pfoh on June 1, 1935.
Mr. Downing had been employed as a design engineer in the engineering department at East Moline Works of International Harvester Co., for 21 years prior to his retirement in 1961.
He was a member of Camp 26, Modern Woodmen of America.
Surviving are the widow; two sons, Donald G., Moline and Michael L., Rockford; a daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Komatar, Silvis; two sisters, Miss Helen Downing and Miss Frances Downing, both of Rock Island; a brother, John, Rock Island, and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, a son, a brother and a sister.
