OBITUARY: Pfc. Jerome Huppert Killed in Germany - reprinted from the November 9, 1944 Pierce County Herald, page 1.

On Saturday evening the sad news was received her of the death of Private First Class Jerome Huppert, son of Mr. and Mrs. Julius Huppert of El Paso township. The loss of this young man, who was held in high esteem by all, is a blow to the entire community. The heartfelt sympathy of a host of friends is extended to the bereaved family.

According to a telegram received from the War department by Mr. and Mrs. Huppert, Jerome was killed in Germany on Oct. 11. He served as a machine gunner.

Private First Class Huppert had returned to fighting duty after having been wounded during the fighting in France on August 5th. At that time he was sent to England by plane and remained at the hospital for several weeks before rejoining his unit. The last letter received by his parents stated that he had traveled quite a bit and was about to see action in Germany.

Memorial services were conducted Wednesday morning from St. Mary's Church, Clayfield, with Rev. Daul officiating.

Private First Class Huppert was born in Oak Grove township October 27, 1918, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Julius Huppert. When the family moved to El Paso township in 1925 he attended the Fischer school and later the Plum City parochial school from which he graduated. He remained on the farm and on August 5, 1941, was inducted into the service of his country, first training at Camp Wheeler, VA. He was in Panama Canal Zone for eighteen months and then returned to this country. He was stationed at Colorado Springs and at Camp Roberts, Cal., and was home on furlough for the last time in April. He went overseas in May.

Surviving are his parents and the following brothers and sisters--Corporal Norbert Huppert, now overseas, Mrs. Linus Swatz of Milwaukee, Mildred of Sauk City, and Cyril, Teresa, Claire, Leo, Leona, Bernard, James, Joan, and Chester at home.
