This came from a scrapbook of W.G.Robinson who resided his last years in Coulterville and prior between Cooulterville and Oakdale.: CORPORAL JOHN HAIR 1843 - 1865 John Hair was born in Washington County, Illinois, the son of Arthur and Eliabeth Hair, March 25, 1843. He joined the Cavalry at Nashville, Illinois on September 17, 1871, for a period of three years. He was mustered in at Springfield, Illinois December 8, 1861 at the age of 18 years. He was in Co. H, 5th Ill. Cav. Vol.. He received his discharge December 31, 1863. He reinlisted January 1, 1864 in Clear Creek, Mississippi for another three years. He listed his residence, at that time, as being Nashville, Washington Co., Illinois. His recruiting officer was Lt. T.H.Barnfield. He also furnished his own horse and equipment. He came home on furlough in Illinois March 18, 1864. On September 1, 1864 he was promoted a Corporal. June 28, 1865 he reported as sick at Overton U.S.A. General Hospital, Memphis, Tennessee. On July 24,1865, being discribed in his papers a Corp. John Hair of Capt. Clarks Co. H, of the 5th Reg't, Cav. of Ill., aged 22 years (5ft 9in, fair complexion, blue eyes, sandy hair, and originally a farmer), he died in the aforementioned hospital, of disease leaving the following possessions: 1 pair trousers, 2 pair flannel drawers, 2 flannel shirts and 1 blanket. He was buried in the Old Salem Cemetery, West Grancote, Washington County, Illinois.
