Attended Virginia Military Institute for 1 year; graduated University Virginia in 1860 with LLD (Doctor of Laws).

Rosser's Division, Cavalry Corps, Army of Northern Virginia, C.S.A.


Residence: Winchester, VA; a 21 year-old Lawyer; 6', dark complexion, gray eyes, black hair.

Enlisted for 1 year's service on 4/19/1861 in Newtown, VA,. he was mustered into Company A, 1st Virginia Cavalry as a 1st Sergeant.

Present on all Rolls from enlistment until listed on Jan & Feb 1862 Roll as transferred & Commissioned as 1st Lieutenant-Adjutant into Field & Staff, Colonel Ashby's 17th Battalion Virginia Cavalry.

On 2/5/1863 this unit merged with other units and became the 11th Cavalry. At that time he was Commissioned at existing rank into Field & Staff VA 11th Cavalry.

Hospitalized with Continuous Fever 8/4/1863 in C.S.A. Hospital at Gordonsville, VA; transferred on 8/6/1863 to C.S.A. General Hospital, Charlottesville, VA , where diagnosed with acute dysentery; returned to duty 9/3/1863.

Resigned on 11/17/1863 because of personal misunderstanding with Col Funsten; remained in same unit as Personal Courier of General Rosser.

On 4/29/1864 assigned to Field & Staff of General Rosser's Cavalry Division.

Promoted 10/15/1864 to Captain, Inspector General of Rosser's Brigade.

Paroled 4/27/1865 in Winchester, VA.

Postwar he was Lawyer at Winchester, VA, beginning in1866; Member VA Legislature, 1881-82; Solicitor General of U.S. in 1894.
