Newspaper Obituary - February 20, 1985 Sandy Creek News - Edith L. Back - Mrs. Edith L. Back, 95, of 217 Juanita Drive, Liverpool, former owner and operator of the Central Hotel, Lacona, died early Saturday, Feb. 8, 1985, at the James Square Nursing Home, Syracuse, where she had been a resident since April, 1983. Mrs. Back was born on Sept. 11, 1889 in Redfield, daughter of Merritt and Martha Cottrell Joyner. She was graduated from Carthage High School and married Carl J. Back in 1910 at Beaver Falls. The couple moved in 1914 to Lacona, where they owned and operated the Central Hotel. Mr. Back died in 1930. Mrs. Back continued to run the hotel with her sons, retiring in 1950. She moved to Liverpool in 1966. She was a charter member and former president of the Cable Trail Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxilliary, 8534, Lacona. She is survived by a son, Grant A., Liverpool; three grandchildren; four step grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Three sons died before her: Richard, in 1911, Ira in June, 1966; and Roderick in Sept., 1966. Funeral services were held Feb. 11, at the Summerville Funeral Home, Sandy Creek, with Rev. Virgil H. Hager, pastor of the Sandy Creek First Baptist, officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Sandy Creek, in the spring. Memorial donations in Mrs. Back's name may be made to Cable Trail Veterans of Foreign Wars 8534 building fund, Lacona.
