He enlisted in Simcoe, Ontario on Mar 21, 1916.
After less than a month's service with 59 RFC Squadron, James was killed in action near Arras. He went out in the direction of Douai with six other aircraft and none of them returned. After the Germans retired from this front, his remains, along with those of his Pilot, RFC Lieutenant George Tod Morris, were recovered beside their downed Royal Aircraft Factory R.E.8 (#A4190) aircraft.
James is remembered on a family marker here at Hamilton Cemetery but he is buried at Orchard Dump Cemetery in France. Family links are attached to the burial memorial.
