After less than a month's service with 59 RFC Squadron, Lieutenant Souter was killed in action near Arras. With six other aircraft he went out in the direction of Douai, and none of them returned. After the Germans retired from this front his remains were recovered, along with those of his Pilot, RFC Lieutenant George Tod MORRIS, beside their downed Royal Aircraft Factory R.E.8 (#A4190) aircraft. The two airmen were laid to rest where they had fallen.

A University of Toronto student (studying applied science), residing on East Avenue North in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, he enlisted in the 133 Over-Seas Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force on 21 March 1916 in Simcoe, Ontario. On arriving in France he was transferred from the Canadian General List to the Royal Flying Corps to first serve with 12 RFC Squadron and then with 59 RFC Squadron.

Son of James E. and Mary E. Souter of Hamilton.

Lieutenant James Mitchell Souter is commemorated on Page 330 of Canada's First World War Book of Remembrance.
He is also remembered with love and honour on a family grave monument in the
Hamilton Cemetery in Hamilton, Ontario.
