Lily Harris Davis was born on 28 Feb 1890 in Newbottle, County Durham, England, to John Bennett Harris and Elizabeth Jane Hill. The name on her birth record is "Lily", not "Lillian" (which is found on many records) and she had no middle name. She was 1 of 23 children and the 10th child of 16 who survived to adulthood. She immigrated with her parents and 8 siblings aboard the SS Saxonia, which docked in Boston, Massachusetts on May 19, 1904. The family travelled to Missouri where several Hill family members already lived; they remained there for about two years. They then moved to Albia, Iowa, where Lily met her husband, Clarence H. Davis, whose family lived 2 houses away on the same street. Lily and Clarence were married in Foster (now defunct), Iowa on 11 Jan 1908. They had four children: Floyd Harlow, Virgil Lee, Mary Elizabeth, and Clarence William. The family moved to Michigan by 1930, living at various locations in Wayne County. Lily passed away in Beyer Memorial Hospital, Ypsilanti, Michigan on 3 May 1976. She had been staying with her youngest son Clarence and his family. She never learned to drive, never wore a pair of slacks, and she was rarely seen without her apron. She was an expert maker of Cornish pasties and an able player of the piano, organ and harmonica. More details about her parents and siblings have been posted on the Iowa Genweb site, under "Special Projects" - Family Group Records.
